Turbulence

Project type

Silver Gelatin Contact Prints

Date

April 2025

Turbulence is visible in the surf, our rivers, and billowing rain clouds but for me it was a feeling. A feeling I wanted to confront using this process. The work evolved from a space of discovery and experimentation in alternative photographic processes and explores ideas associated with identity, space/place, and inheritance. Turbulence is silver gelatin contact prints of water in motion. Their abstractness create imaginary places and landscapes. A technique used in developing black and white prints, yielded a colorful world of motion and fluidity.
The chaotic and unpredictable speed in which the water particles rapidly change was captured with a flash of light. The process revealed characteristics of turbulence visible in the formation of eddies, vortices, and swirls within the water flow. The disruption was a physical act that involved shaking the water to ensure irregular fluctuations and mixing, in contrast to laminar flow, in which water moves in smooth layers. In this turbulent flow, the speed of the water is continuously undergoing changes in both magnitude and direction. There are 18 prints in the series and are available to print in large format.
